Our Story

From 1986 to 2026

1986

Barbara and Rick were a true American ranch couple. They didn’t just build a life on the land, they built a future for others.

After enduring the loss of two children and facing the reality that Rick could not father children of his own, they chose to open their home in a different way. When three young brother's DJ, Devin, and Derek, found themselves without stability or a clear path forward within the foster care system, Barbara and Rick stepped in without hesitation. What they offered wasn’t charity. It was family.

Raised on the ranch, the boys were taught the values that last; hard work, accountability, loyalty, and the importance of keeping your word. They learned that family is built through commitment, not blood, and that love is proven through action.

Through the years hardship and challenges followed each of them but those valuable lessons carried forward. Two of the brothers went on to serve over 20 years each in the United States military, reaching high levels of responsibility before retiring. The third became a lead clinical coordinator at one of the largest hospitals in the western United States, working alongside more than 120 cardiovascular specialists. Their paths look different, but they share the same foundation; one built by Barbara and Rick through sacrifice, discipline, and unwavering belief in doing what’s right.

This is the legacy of Red Top Ranch. Quiet strength. Purpose passed on. And lives changed because someone chose to open a door.

Adoption shaped our brand’s values and exists for every child who was chosen. For every parent who stepped up when it would’ve been easier to walk away. For the kind of Americans who don’t ask for praise, they just do what’s right. Adoption taught us that real strength is quiet. That purpose is built through responsibility. And that love isn’t something you say rather it’s something you live out, day after day.

Red Top Ranch Coffee stands for those who turned pain into purpose, love into action, and refused to be defined by circumstances. For those who faced the impossible and overcame it through grit, faith, and commitment.

This isn’t just coffee.

It’s a belief system.

Brewed from legacy. Built on doing right by others.

How Red Top Ranch Coffee Began ~

Red Top Ranch Coffee was forged in hard work, family, and a love that chose responsibility over comfort.

Barbara and Rick didn’t just raise boys—they built men.

On the Red Top Ranch, lessons weren’t handed out lightly. They were earned through early mornings, dusty boots, strong hands, and showing up when it mattered. The ranch was home, and more importantly, it was proof that family is built by commitment, not blood.

Years later, the boys came together to honor the people who raised them. Digging through old photos from their childhood on the ranch, they were reminded of the grit, loyalty, and values that shaped their lives. The eldest brother, DJ, put that legacy to music, writing “The Hands That Raised Us” as a Christmas gift to Barbara and Rick, a song that says thank you the only way ranch folk know how: straight from the heart. That tribute stirred something bigger.

DJ started thinking about how many adoptive families live this same story; raising kids, building character, and doing the work without recognition. That reflection turned inward as well, to the five children he committed himself too since 2008.

He didn’t just step in, he stayed. He legally adopted one child (Justin Patton, pictured above) and raised four others as his own, on top of his 3 other biological children by leading through presence, work ethic, and steady responsibility. It reinforced what he already knew to be true: there are still countless kids out there waiting for someone willing to take on the responsibility of raising them right.

Wanting to pass that legacy forward, DJ looked for a way to turn gratitude into action while helping his own son, Justin, take the lead with a new business opportunity. With a shared love of strong, honest coffee and the right connections, Red Top Ranch Coffee was born.

This coffee stands for more than a good brew.

It stands for families who CHOOSE love.

For parents who put in the work.

For kids who deserve a home.

What started on one ranch grew into something bigger ~ a way to share stories, honor families, and support the next generation.
